  • Episode Summary

    • Ben enters from work, Susan is choosing wool for a cardigan for Janey’s baby, Nick is pretending to drink a cup of tea and Mr Beamish has died. The old dentist from upstairs. Michael is in his cadet uniform and doesn’t want Ben to talk to him. Susan says the downstairs toilet needs heating installed for Janey and the unborn baby’s eventual visit. Nick has a job as a film extra. He is practicing background acting. Ben is now getting some of Mr Beamish’s old clients. He used to throw in half price haircuts on Thursdays. Roger Bailey comes to the surgery to look a, and hopefully buy, Mr Beamish’s old surgery upstairs. Ben tells him it is no longer available. When he arrives home that night, he finds Michael has fitted bolts to the front door and won’t let him in, without proving who he is. Michael tells Ben and Susan that parents are obsolete and that the army is his mother and father now. As Ben enters the kitchen, there is Roger, who has been helping to baby proof the house. Ben needs a drink, it has been padlocked into the kitchen cupboard. Abi returns and Roger is smitten. As they talk about Roger, Ben drinks from the liqueur chocolates. He says he could have been a fashion guru if it hadn’t been for Rogers Father. Susan tells him the gas men are coming to fit a new boiler tomorrow, and Nick entertains some other film extras behind the sofa. A traffic warden, an old lady and a city gent! The boiler men are doing their best with Susan’s interference and Michael wonders why his Mother hasn’t done his washing, Susan suggests the army should now do that. Ben has yet another of Mr Beamish’s old patients, this one doesn’t believe that he is not Mr Beamish. Roger enters still hoping the surgery is available, and wants to discuss Abi, Ben tells him she used to be a man. When Ben returns home, the house is in disarray, the plumbers have left, there is no hot water. Susan has tried to get someone else but it seems they are on some list. Ben is still locked out of his drink cupboard. Susan tells Ben there is enough hot water for one shower, and they race to the bathroom, where Nick is wallowing in a lovely hot tub. Ben tries to pick the lock on his drinks, with no success! Nick is trying to mend the boiler, but when Ben investigates he was only performing background action. Ben decides to get a proper plumber, but can’t and we see him trying to fix the boiler instead. Michael frightens Ben with a cross bow and Susan tries to tell Ben what to do with the boiler. It explodes, and all the lights go out too. Finally they employ an electrician, as they sit in the cold and the dark. Nick has a torch, and even Michael comes down and is afraid to go back upstairs. Susan has asked the electrician who is also a carpenter to give her a quote to turn Nick’s room into a nursery, as the lights come back up we see Ben getting ready to strangle her. Roger Bailey has finally managed to move in to the surgery upstairs, and Ben gives him yet another of Mr Beamish’s elderly patients to get rid of him. At home later, Ben has broken the cupboard door off to get to the drink, and Nick has replaced the contents with cold tea, a little show biz trick!
